I'll Be Quirky: 11/11/16 vs. Coppin State

Hello and welcome to the 2016-17 Hofstra men’s basketball season! Inspired by “The Skinny” blog produced by Islanders statistician Eric Hornick, I’m going to try something a little new (let’s see if I actually stick with it) by posting some interesting (at least to me) stats and figures before each game and possibly after, depending on what transpires.

For now I’ll dub this the “I’ll Be Quirky,” but that name could change. Or it may not. Who knows? Anyway, here is the first edition of the I’ll Be Quirky.

SEASON OPENERS
Hofstra in season openers: 45-35
Joe Mihalich in season openers: 10-8 (2-1 Hofstra, 8-7 Niagara)
Most lopsided season-opening win: 95-53 over Puerto Rico, 1949-50
Most lopsided season-opening win over DI foe: 94-61 over Jacksonville, 2014-15
Most lopsided season-opening loss: 96-57 to St. Joseph’s 1965-66, 60-21 to NYU, 1936-37

COPPIN STATE AND THE MEAC
Hofstra vs. Coppin State: 1-0
Hofstra vs. the MEAC: 9-6

Hofstra has played just two games against MEAC foes since 2000, both of which took place during the 2014-15 season. The Dutchmen beat Norfolk State, 88-74, on Dec. 2 and beat Coppin State, 105-64, on Dec. 10.

ROBINSON’S REDSHIRT RETURN
Jamaal Robinson, who redshirted as an academic junior last season, is only the third Hofstra player in the DD Era (1993-present) to redshirt after his freshman season. He will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Danny Walker and Nathaniel Lester who each set career-highs in scoring in their first games following a redshirt season. Robinson’s current career high is 22 points, set against James Madison on Mar. 1, 2014.

Nathaniel Lester: 33 pts/5 rebs/2 steals/1 assist vs. LIU 11/11/11
Danny Walker: 21 pts/4 rebs/3 blks/2 assists/1 steal vs. Marist 11/18/03
