I’ll Be Quirky: UNC Wilmington

This has been a bananas week in the world in which I spend my basketball off-seasons, so we’ll just look ahead to UNC Wilmington tonight before looking back at tonight’s game and the Northeastern game in advance of Charleston on Saturday. By that point perhaps six more managers will be out of work thanks to the 2017 Astros!

SCOUTING UNC WILMINGTON
The Seahawks have also had an interesting week. UNCW, which is 3-15 this season, 0-6 in the CAA and in the midst of an 11-game losing streak, fired third-year head coach C.B. McGrath on Monday and replaced him on an interim basis with assistant Rob Burke. This is believed to be only the fifth in-season coaching change in CAA history. The team making the change is 2-2 in its first game under the new head coach.

The Dutchmen and Seahawks had no common foes in non-league play. Both team shave lost to William & Mary in CAA play while Hofstra has beaten James Madison, Towson and Elon, all of whom beat UNCW,

The Dutchmen, who were picked first in the CAA preseason poll, are ranked 142nd at KenPom.com. The Seahawks, who were picked ninth, are ranked 334th at KenPom.com.

According to KenPom.com, the Dutchmen rank second in the CAA in league-only offensive efficiency (112.2) and eighth in defensive efficiency (107.6). The Huskies rank last in the CAA in league-only offensive efficiency (93.5) and ninth in defensive efficiency (108.9).

Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims leads the Seahawks in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.3 rpg). Junior forward Marten Linssen ranks second in scoring at 10.2 ppg.

KenPom.com predicts a 75-67 win for the Dutchmen. Per the wise guys in Vegas, for entertainment purposes only, the Dutchmen are 9.5-point underdogs. The Dutchmen are 12-5 against the spread this season.

SCOUT SEZ
“Obviously need to be concerned about UNCW rallying around the coaching deal, but I’d bet they get rocked by Hofstra. UNCW shoots poorly from the perimeter and that’s a problem vs. zone. They also are pressing and Hofstra is a bad team to press.”

ALL-TIME VS. UNC WILMINGTON
Hofstra is 21-21 against UNC Wilmington in a series that began when the Dutchmen joined the CAA prior to the 2001-02 season. The teams split the series last season, when the Dutchmen earned an 87-72 win at home before the Seahawks recorded an 87-79 upset in North Carolina. C.B. McGrath went 3-2 against the Dutchmen including a win in the 2018 CAA Tournament.
