I'll Be Quirky: New York Institute of Technology

Not those Bears.

Hey, this didn’t work as well as it did last time. The Flying Dutchmen ensured they would not go winless by beating Monmouth at the Arena last Saturday, but a 1-31 finish is back on the table after a loss to Bucknell on Wednesday night. The Dutchmen will try to get back to .500 this afternoon, when they host *checks notes* New York Institute of Technology. The Dutchmen really better get back to .500 this afternoon. Here are look backs at the games against Monmouth and Bucknell and a look ahead to *checks notes* da Bears.

THE GAME BEFORE THE MOST RECENT GAME SUMMARIZED IN ONE PARAGRAPH
Eli Pemberton and Desure Buie scored 17 points apiece to lead six (!!!) players in double figures as the Dutchmen routed Monmouth, 94-74. The Dutchmen mounted runs of 15-0 and 17-0 during a 34-4 first half run that turned an 18-17 deficit into a 51-22 lead. #Math Tareq Coburn (11 points 12 rebounds) notched a double-double while Isaac Kante (15 points), Jalen Ray (14 points) and newcomer Omar Silverio (13 points) also scored at least 10 points for the Dutchmen. Buie added eight assists.

The One With Six Players In Double Figures

WAS THIS A UNICORN SCORE?
Yes! The Dutchmen beat North Carolina AT&T 92-72 last season and Northeastern 94-70 during the 2000-01 season and something called a Dalhousie 96-74 during the 1970-71 season, but had never before won 94-74. This is, duh, the Dutchmen’s first unicorn score of the season. They recorded 10 unicorn scores last season. The term unicorn score was coined by Mets superfan, historian and blogger Greg Prince to describe a score by which the Mets had never previously won

THE FLYING DUTCHMEN AFTER TWO GAMES
As you may have gathered by now, the Dutchmen were 1-1 after two games. This ties the 2019-20 team for the 28th-best record through two games. Forty-one other teams began 1-1, most recently the *checks notes* 2018-19 team. Here is how some other notable Hofstra teams have fared through two games.

NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAMS
1975-76: 1-1
1976-77: 2-0
1999-2000: 1-1
2000-01: 2-0

NIT TEAMS
2005-06: 1-1
2006-07: 0-2
2015-16: 2-0
2018-19: 1-1

This feature is also inspired by Greg Prince, who measures how the current Mets compare, record-wise, to previous teams through the same point in the season.

THE MOST RECENT GAME SUMMARIZED IN ONE PARAGRAPH
The Dutchmen led by four points early in the second half but Bucknell made 11 of 12 3-point attempts over the next 11-plus minutes to cruise to an 86-71 win. Desure Buie scored 11 of his team-high 19 points during a 17-2 run that spanned the halves and gave the Dutchmen a 44-40 lead with 17:24 left. And then the game was cancelled and Hofstra won? Tareq Coburn had six of his 14 points during the run including the 3-pointer that gave the Dutchmen their four-point lead. Jalen Ray had 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Eli Pemberton was scoreless in the first half before finishing with 10 points.

THE FLYING DUTCHMEN AFTER THREE GAMES
As you may have gathered by now, the Dutchmen are 1-2 after two games. This ties the 2019-20 team for the 45th-best record through two games. Thirty-one other teams began 1-1, most recently the 2016-17 team. Here is how some other notable Hofstra teams have fared through two games.

101010101010 WINS
The Dutchmen put six players in double figures last Saturday for the first time since a 96-58 win over SUNY-Stony Brook on Dec. 13, 2016. Back then, starters Eli Pemberton (18 points), Ty Greer (14 points), Deron Powers (13 points) Brian Bernardi (11 points) and Rokas Gustys (11 points) all scored at least 10 points, as did reserve Justin Wright-Foreman (22 points). That was the second straight double-digit scoring performance for Wright-Foreman. I wonder whatever happened to him? Speaking of that…

SO WHO HAS A DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORING STREAK NOW?
Justin Wright-Foreman, as you may or may not recall, ended his Hofstra career by scoring in double figures in each of his last 88 games. With his graduation, the longest streak of double-digit scoring efforts belong to Desure Buie and Jalen Ray, each of whom scored in double digits for the third straight time Saturday and the fourth straight time Wednesday.

HALF A HUNDRED IN A HALF
The Dutchmen carried a 51-24 lead into the half last Saturday. It was the 27th time the Dutchmen have scored at least 50 points in a half under Joe Mihalich and the first time since they scored 57 points in the second half of the 104-99 LOSS (!!!) to James Madison on Feb. 23.

A PRETTY WHOLE HALF
The Dutchmen’s 27-point halftime lead Saturday was their fourth-largest of the Mihalich era and their third-biggest against a Division I foe and their biggest intermission advantage since Feb. 7, when the Dutchmen led Elon 57-22 at the half.

40 (62-22) Rosemont, 12/22/18
35 (57-22) Elon 2/7/19
30 (48-18) Delaware, 12/28/18
27 (51-24) Monmouth, 11/9/19

RUN RUNAWAY
The Dutchmen’s 17-0 run in the first half Saturday was their longest uninterrupted scoring run since a 19-0 run against Charleston on Feb. 14. It was fourth third run of at least 17 unanswered points since the start of last season. The Dutchmen also had 17-0 runs against North Carolina A&T and Rosemont.

REACHING THE CENTURY MARK AGAINST THE MAAC
The win over Monmouth was the Dutchmen’s 100th against a current MAAC school. Hofstra is 100-118 all-time against current MAAC schools.

WELCOME TO THE ALL-TIME SCORING LIST (which I’m going to try to figure out this year)
Sophomore Omar Silverio and freshman Caleb Burgess scored their first points for Hofstra Saturday. Silverio drained a 3-pointer to begin the 34-4 run and finished with seven points and Burgess followed up by hitting his only field goal attempt.

GREETINGS GIBSON AND HI HUGHES
Carl Gibson Jr. and Hal Hughes officially earned an entry in the Hofstra Basketball Encyclopedia (which doesn’t exist but it would be cool if it did***) by making their Dutchmen debuts. Gibson, a freshman, played the final nine seconds of Saturday’s win while Hughes, a redshirt freshman, recorded a block in seven minutes of action against Bucknell.

***back before Baseball-Reference.com, we had to look up baseball facts in The Baseball Encyclopedia. And we liked it!

PEMBERTON’S PACE
Eli Pemberton, the most recent member of the Hofstra 1,000-point club, moved into 13th place on the all-time scoring list Saturday, when he scored 17 points to nudge past Rick Apodaca. With his 10 points Wednesday, Pemberton all but ensured he’l gain two spots on the list today. He needs three points to move past Leroy Allen into 12th place and five points to surpass Frank Walker for 11th place. Norman Richardson is 244 points away in 10th place, so unless Jim Larranaga becomes head coach in the next hour, Pemberton probably won’t reach him today.

11.) Frank Walker 1,437 (1985-89)
12.) Leroy Allen 1,435 (1983-87)
13.) ELI PEMBERTON 1,433 (2016-present)
14.) Rick Apodaca 1,422 (1999-2003)
15.) Ken Rood 1,368 (1973-77)

GIVE BUIE A HAND
Desure Buie moved into eighth place on the all-time assist list Saturday, when his eight assists vaulted him past Woody Souffrant. Buie is 12 assists away from moving past Loren Stokes into seventh place.

7.) Loren Stokes 377 (2003-07)
8.) DESURE BUIE 366 (2015-present)
9.) Woody Souffrant 362 (2001-05)
10.) Carlos Rivera 351 (2003-07)

NEW YORK TECH AND HOFSTRA VS. NON-DIVISION I FOES
New York Institute of Technology is a Division II school located in Old Westbury. As you may know if you live in the area, New York Tech is located fewer than 10 miles from Hofstra. The things you learn here! The Bears play in the East Coast Conference WHICH IS A REAL THING I KEPT TELLING YOU GUYS IT WAS A REAL THING NOBODY EVER LISTENED TO ME, which I assume means this game can be used for tiebreaker purposes in my annual ECC standings.

New York Tech is 0-3 after an 88-80 loss to Nyack last night. Back-to-back games in November? Senior Jeffrey Hayden leads the Bears in both scoring (21.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg).

New York Tech was picked to finish tied for seventh in the nine-team ECC.

There is no line on this game, because even degenerate gamblers do not bet on Division I vs. non-Division I games. Hofstra is 1-2 against the spread this season.

Hofstra and New York Tech have never met in men’s basketball but used to meet on an almost-annual basis in baseball, where New York Tech was a Division I independent until the 2017-18 season. The Dutchmen are 29-21-2 all-time against the Bears. Hofstra has faced just eight schools in baseball as often or more frequently than it has faced New York Tech. The only schools the Dutchmen have recorded more baseball wins against are Drexel (35) and Towson (34)

The Flying Dutchmen have won their last 19 games against non-Division I foes dating back to a 70-54 loss to Florida Southern during the 1988-89 seasons. This inexplicably marks the fifth straight season in which the Dutchmen have faced a non-Division I foe. The Dutchmen beat Division III Rosemont, 107-54, on Dec. 22.
