I’ll Be Quirky: Delaware

Alas but not the Beaches.

#CAAHoops season is here! Without further ado, the I’ll Be Quirky for the conference opener against Delaware.

OVER THE AIR
Hofstra will provide radio feed of today’s game at the Pride Productions hub. Delaware will offer free video here.

SCOUTING DELAWARE
The Blue Hens, under rookie head coach Martin Ingelsby, went 7-6 during the non-conference schedule, though two of the wins came against non-Division I schools. Delaware beat Iona, 63-54, in its most recent game Wednesday night.

The Dutchmen and Blue Hens had one common foe during non-league play. The Dutchmen beat Bradley 92-90 on Nov. 21 while the Blue Hens knocked off the Braves, 63-49, on Nov. 13

The Dutchmen, who were picked sixth in the CAA preseason poll, enter today ranked 146th at KenPom.com. The Blue Hens, who were picked 10th, are ranked 267th.

The Dutchmen rank third among CAA teams in scoring (80.8 ppg) but are allowing  76.7 ppg, the most in the league. The Blue Hens rank ninth in scoring (65.0 ppg) but are allowing just 65.2 ppg, the second-lowest total in the CAA.

The Dutchmen rank sixth in the CAA in field goal percentage (44.3%) and first in 3-point field goal percentage (39.9%) They are allowing opposing teams to shoot 44.3 percent overall, tied for eighth in the league, and 37.2 percent from beyond the arc, which is ninth.

The Blue Hens rank ninth in the CAA in both field goal percentage (40.6%) and 3-point field goal percentage (30.3%). They are third in field goal percentage defense (40.5%) and second in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.4%).

ALL-TIME VS. DELAWARE
Hofstra is 52-31 against Delaware, whom it has faced more often than any opponent, The two schools were rivals in the East Coast Conference and the North Atlantic Conference/America East before heading to the CAA, along with Drexel and Towson, for the 2001-02 season.

The Dutchmen swept last season’s series, when they earned a 90-80 win in Hempstead in the CAA opener on Dec. 31 and a 77-66 victory in New-ARK on Feb. 13. It was the second straight sweep for the Dutchmen, who lost the previous seven games between the schools from 2011-12 through 2013-14.

THE DUTCHMEN IN CAA OPENERS
The Dutchmen are 8-7 in the first game of league play since joining the CAA in 2001-02. They are 2-1 in CAA openers under Joe Mihalich with victories in each of the last two seasons.

REPLACING THE MISSING SCORING—AND THEN SOME
The Dutchmen lost a whopping 50.3 ppg from last year’s squad via the graduations of Juan’ya Green (17.8 ppg), Ameen Tanksley 15.9 ppg), Denton Koon (11.4 ppg) and Malik Nichols (5.2 ppg). But they have “found” 55.6 ppg this season via five players who didn’t play for the team last season plus the mergence of sophomore Justin Wright-Foreman.

Eli Pemberton (14.5)
Deron Powers (13.6)
Justin Wright-Foreman (9.6)***
Ty Greer (9.2)
Jamall Robinson (5.5)
Hunter Sabety (3.0)

***The Wright-Foreman average subtracts the 1.2 ppg he averaged last season to better account for the "found" points.

BERNARDI CLOSES IN ON 1,000
Senior guard Brian Bernardi scored 11 points in the 84-64 win over Siena on Dec. 22 and has 972 points in two-plus seasons at Hofstra. He is looking to become the 34th player in program history to reach 1,000 points and the fifth to do so after beginning his career elsewhere.

GUSTYS HITS THE TOP 10
Junior forward Rokas Gustys pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds against Siena to move into 10th place on the program’s all-time list with 756 boards. He moved past Stephen Nwaukoni (753 rebounds) and is 11 rebounds away from surpassing Quinas Brower for ninth place.

#CAAHoops pre-regular season poll: 2016-17

This poll is so bigly. You wouldn't believe how bigly it is.

We all love pre-season conference polls, especially here in the age of #ConstantContent, but I’ve always thought there should be a second pre-season poll conducted after non-conference play but before league play begins. So I decided to do it this season for #CAAHoops by checking in with some of the league’s best writers and superfans.

While there was a lot of movement between October’s poll and today’s, UNC Wilmington is an even more resounding pick to win it all. Unanimous, in fact, and if we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that polls are the most reliable indicator of the American pulse, so therefore, the season should not even be played.

College of Charleston was a pretty solid pick for second and the Drexel-Delaware-James Madison triumvirate a popular pick for the bottom three, but 3 through 7 were the subject of much debate.

Check it out for yourself (vote totals in parenthesis) and then clip, save and forward to your friends. Following the current poll, I’ll also list the CAA’s official preseason poll so that we can compare and contrast.

Lastly, I can largely assure you our balloting was not impacted by nefarious foreign foes/allies, and that the Cold War remains won in this corner of the world.

I’ll Be Quirky: Non-Conference Roundup

The most recent I'll Be Quirky was Dec. 13, so this photo is...oh no, poor Homer.

Thanks to the hectic nature of the week before Christmas—it’s a really crazy time when your wife and Jay Wright share the same birthday!—I never got a Siena “I’ll Be Quirky” up with a recap of the thrashing of SUNY-Stony Brook. So close to non-conference perfection. This is like the five-point loss to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in 2004 all over again.

Anyway, with #CAAHoops play finally starting up Saturday (whoo hoo!) I thought it’d be a good time to get up the most recent recaps and take care of some odds and ends before the beginning of the conference season. There will be a couple stories up here tomorrow, including the CAA debut of I’ll Be Quirky prior to the Delaware game, so stay tuned!
`
THE GAME BEFORE THE MOST RECENT GAME SUMMARIZED IN ONE PARAGRAPH
The Dutchmen never trailed in dismantling SUNY-Stony Brook 96-58 in the most lopsided beating in the series since SUNY-Stony Brook crawled into Division I. Justin Wright-Foreman led six players in double figures by scoring 22 points for the Dutchmen, who led by as many as 43 points in the second half before taking pity on their undermanned little brothers to the east. Ty Greer (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Rokas Gustys (11 points, 18 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles while Deron Powers had 13 points and seven assists and Brian Bernardi chipped in with 11 points and four assists.

THE MOST RECENT GAME SUMMARIZED IN ONE PARAGRAPH
The Dutchmen got a bit of revenge on Siena for last year’s lopsided loss in Loudonville by cruising to an 84-64 win at the Arena last Thursday night. Deron Powers led five players in double figures by collecting a team-high 21 points and eight assists while committing just one turnover. Justin Wright-Foreman (16 points) continued his emergence as a reliable scorer while Eli Pemberton (13 points), Brian Bernardi (11 points) and Rokas Gustys (10 points) all chipped in Gustys added 15 rebounds and Hunter Sabety had five blocks and six points in just 11 minutes.

HEMPSTEAD TURNPIKE IS EASY STREET
The 38-point rout of SUNY-Stony Brook was the fifth-most lopsided win by the Flying Dutchmen in the CAA era and the third-most lopsided win against a Division I foe.

BACK-TO-BACK BIG WINS
The Dutchmen have won consecutive games by at least 20 points for the second time in the Joe Mihalich era and the first time since late December 2014, when they beat Long Island University 88-62 on Dec. 28 and Central Connecticut State University 84-56 on Dec. 31.

WINNING THE NON-CONFERENCE SEASON
The Dutchmen will end the non-conference play with a winning record for the third straight season and for the 10th time since joining the CAA in 2001-02. They’ll complete the non-conference schedule with a winning percentage of better than .600 for the seventh time. CAA games that were played in the middle of the non-conference schedule were not counted but are listed separately. Also, these figures do not include any “Bracket Buster” games scheduled in the middle of the season.

2004-05: 8-1 (.889) 1-0 CAA
2005-06: 6-2 (.750) 2-0 CAA
2008-09: 8-3 (.727) 1-0 CAA
2014-15: 9-4 (.692)
2015-16: 8-4 (.667)

2009-10: 7-5 (.583) 1-0 CAA
2010-11: 6-5 (.545) 1-0 CAA

In addition, Joe Mihalich completes the non-conference schedule with a winning record for the ninth time in 19 seasons as a head coach. This is the second time he’s presided over three straight over-.500 performances in non-conference play. Niagara had a winning record in non-conference games in three consecutive seasons from 2007-08 through 2009-10.

YEAH BABY
Deron Powers had his best game in a Hofstra uniform last Thursday, when he led the Dutchmen with 21 points and eight assists while playing a team-high 35 minutes in the win over Siena. Powers’ effort marked the 12th time since the 2009-10 season that a Hofstra player has scored at least 20 points and collected at least eight assists. However. he is the first player to reach those figures while committing one turnover or fewer since Chaz Williams scored 20 points and had nine assists and one turnover against Drexel on Feb. 10, 2010.

PEMBERTON HITS THE TOP 10
Eli Pemberton, who was the first Hofstra freshman since Antoine Agudio (2004-05) to open his career by scoring in double digits in his first five games, is already the 19th Dutchmen freshman in the CAA era to score at least 100 points in his debut season. He moved past Shemiye McLendon into 10th place on the CAA-era freshman scoring list last Thursday and is only two points away from surpassing Nathaniel Lester for ninth place.

1.) Antoine Agudio, 452 (2004-05)
2.) Charles Jenkins, 436 (2007-08)
3.) Kenny Adeleke, 433 (2001-02)
4.) Loren Stokes, 374 (2003-04)
5.) Chaz Williams, 325 (2009-10)
6.) Jamall Robinson, 312 (2013-14)
7.) Halil Kanacevic, 294 (2009-10)
8.) Carlos Rivera, 226 (2003-04)
9.) Nathaniel Lester, 189 (2007-08)
10.) ELI PEMBERTON, 188 (2016-17)

WRIGHT SOPHOMORE STUFF
After scoring just 44 points as a freshman, Justin Wright-Foreman has emerged as one of the Dutchmen’s top scorers this season. He was the 27th Hofstra freshman in the CAA era to score fewer than 100 points but already has more points as a sophomore than all but five of his predecessors. Wright-Foreman needs just five points to surpass Stephen Nwaukoni’s sophomore season total and 19 to surge past Gibran Washington’s sophomore season tally.

David Imes 251 points 2010-11 (25 as a freshman)
Ziggy Sestokas 219 points 2006-07 (29 as a freshman)
Greg Washington 169 points 2008-09 (33 as a freshman)
Gibran Washington 158 points 2002-03 (76 as a freshman)

I’ll Be Quirky: SUNY-Stony Brook

SUNY-Shelbyville issues a declaration of war in this file photo.

The Flying Dutchmen did not knock off Goliath on Sunday, but they covered the spread in a 96-73 loss to Kentucky at Barclays Center. The Dutchmen will look to enter finals on a winning note tonight, when they take on local rival SUNY-Stony Brook at the Arena. Here’s a quick look back at the Kentucky game and a look ahead to SUNY-Stony Brook.
`
THE MOST RECENT GAME SUMMARIZED IN ONE PARAGRAPH

Deron Powers continued his recent impressive play by leading the Dutchmen with 18 points, five assists and 38 minutes played while committing just two turnovers. Rokas Gustys had 13 points and eight rebounds while Justin Wright-Foreman scored all 14 of his points in the second half.

KEEPING IT CLOSE(-ish) AGAINST KENTUCKY
The Dutchmen didn’t fare too poorly in losing by 23 points to Kentucky. It was tied for the second-smallest margin of defeat for a Wildcats foe this season. Stephen F. Austin (which lost 87-64 on Nov. 11) also lost by 23, while only Michigan State (which lost 69-48 on Nov. 15) stayed closer to Kentucky in a loss. Kentucky did, of course, lose to UCLA, 97-92, on Dec. 3.

Hofstra enters today ranked 171st at KenPom.com while SUNY-Stony Brook is ranked 231st.

SUNY-Stony Brook enters tonight 3-6. The Patriots fell to Rutgers and former head coach Steve Pikiell on Saturday, when the Scarlet Knights came back from a 10-point second half deficit to post a 71-66 win.

The Dutchmen and Patriots have a whopping five common foes this season. Hofstra edged Columbia, 88-86, on Nov. 29 while SUNY-Stony Brook fell to the Lions 73-66, on Nov. 11. Vermont, which will face Stony Brook twice during the America East season, beat the Dutchmen 87-73 on Nov. 22. The Patriots faced a pair of Hofstra’s CAA rivals in losing to Towson, 88-63, on Nov. 25 and beating Northeastern, 77-75, on Dec. 3.

Hofstra is 8-11 in all sports against SUNY-Stony Brook since the two schools began scheduling each other again in the spring of 2014.

THINGS YOU CAN SHOUT ON TWITTER IF CALLS GO DO NOT GO HOFSTRA’S WAY
Suffolk County bias! (Duh)
It took you five tries to win what we won on the first try! (SUNY-Stony Brook was 0-4 in America East title games before finally winning it all last year)
You lost to Kentucky by more than us bias! (SUNY-Stony Brook’s reward for winning the America East was a 28-point loss to Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament)
Parker Executive Search bias! (Jay Young should have gotten the head coaching gig at SUNY-Stony Brook after Steve Pikiell went to Rutgers but ADs do executive search firms favors)

I’ll Be Quirky: Kentucky

I cursed a lot when this happened.

The Flying Dutchmen’s four-game winning streak ended Tuesday night, when St. Bonaventure blew a 13-point lead but pulled away late for an 81-75 victory at the Arena. The Dutchmen will look to get back on the winning track today when they face some school from Kentucky at Not Nassau Coliseum. Here’s a quick look back at the loss to St. Bonaventure and a look ahead to whomever the Dutchmen are facing today.

THE MOST RECENT GAME SUMMARIZED IN ONE PARAGRAPH
The Dutchmen overcame a 13-point second half deficit and led by four points with five minutes to play before St. Bonaventure ended the game on a 13-3 run. The Dutchmen missed their final seven shots and two free throw attempts over the final 1:56. Every starter scored in double figures for the Dutchmen, who received 20 points as well as a team-high nine rebounds and four steals from Rokas Gustys. Eli Pemberton had 15 points while Brian Bernardi and Ty Greer had 11 points apiece and Deron Powers added 10 points and six assists.

KENTUCKY AND THE SEC
This will be the first-ever meeting between Hofstra and Kentucky in men’s  basketball. Kentucky enters today 8-1 and ranked sixth in the AP Top 25 and seventh in the coaches’ Top 25. The Wildcats, who were the top-ranked team in the country prior to a 97-92 loss to UCLA on Dec. 3, beat Valparaiso, 87-63, on Wednesday. Hofstra and Kentucky have no mutual foes this season.

Hofstra is ranked 175th at KenPom.com today while Kentucky is ranked fourth.

The Dutchmen are 2-10 all-time against current Southeastern Conference schools. Hofstra edged Florida 68-67 during the 1977-78 season and beat Mississippi 78-73 during the 1990-91 season. This is the second straight season in which Hofstra has faced an SEC foe. The Dutchmen lost to South Carolina, 94-84, in the second round of the Paradise Jam last Nov. 22.

The Flying Dutchmen have never faced a John Calipari-coached team, though the 1993-94 squad played in the Abdow’s Hall of Fame Classic, which was hosted by Calipari’s UMass team. However, the Dutchmen lost to Maryland, 93-67, in the opening round and faced Hartford in the consolation game.

Hofstra is 4-2 all-time against Kentucky in other sports. The men’s soccer team is 2-0 against the Wildcats (a 3-1 win in 1993 and a 3-0 victory in 1994). The volleyball team is 2-1 against the Wildcats (a 3-2 win on Sept. 18, 1999, a 3-1 win on Aug. 30, 2002 and a 3-0 loss on Sept. 11, 2004) while the women’s basketball team fell, 67-54, on Nov. 26, 2006.

Your coach couldn’t hack it in the CAA bias! (John Calipari played two years at UNC Wilmington before finishing his collegiate career at Clarion—of course the CAA didn’t exist when Calipari played for UNC Wilmington but work with me here people)
